Remo 14" Ambassador X Coated
Based on 16 reviews
I'm using the Remo Ambassador X on a 14'' Gretsch Renown Maple snare and the results are very good - especially on a medium to high tuning. The sound is very punchy and open with lots of crack, and the extra thickness in comparison to the standard Ambassador makes this drum head more durable and also darkens the tone slightly. I use the drum head for recording, it can withstand a good beating from heavy hitting drummers and maintain its tone for considerably longer than the regular Ambassador, however if heavy hitting is what you are primarily dealing with I would still recommend a double-ply head to maintain the tone for a longer period of time. The Ambassador X is a great single-ply drum head for a wide range of musical genres - open, warm and punchy with some extra durability.
Aquarian 14" Deep Vintage II Coated
Based on 4 reviews
The Aquarian Vintage (Modern and Deep models) drumheads are the way to bring the old standards back to life. Since the "new" trend in recording pop-rock music requires a bit dull, short, mellow and warm sounding drums, the vintage coating heads are the way to go. I prefer the Modern Vintage to the Texture coated, since the Vintage models has a bit less attack, but extended warmth and mellow feel. I even preffer the Modern Vintage as resonant heads on toms as well. This is the way to controll the sustain of the toms even better. The coating itself is indestructible - I still record regullary on Modern Vintage heads bought 3 years back with no traces of use. The Deep Vintage heads shorten the sustain, but they're not "dead" heads as you may expect being so thick (10+10...
DW 14" Coated Snare Drum Head
Based on 3 reviews
Don't mess about, if you have DW drums, put DW heads on them!!!! I have tried just about every make and type of snare head there is, don't get me wrong, some of them sound good, in fact very good with a bit of effort and fiddling about. The DW snare head is 'semi tensioned' straight out of the box, (quite a sturdy box, so you can throw a spare head in your traps case and not worry about it getting damaged), with very little time and effort it will sing like an angel on your cherished DW snare drum.
Aquarian 14" Super 2 Coated

I purchased a Yamaha maple 12" snare that came with this same series of head and was so impressed with the evenness of tone and simplicity within tuning that I bought this one for another Yamaha maple snare. Great purchase! I don't know what Aquarian does, but they were able to outdo my Remo Coated series snare head by far by making the drum sound more pronounced. Though I am a Remo guy typicall for all other heads on a drum, I am beginning to get curious of what other heads from Aquarian might do for my tone.
Remo 14" Diplomat Coated

These heads a good budget choice for concert snare drums. They are very responsive for tuning and muffling so with a good snare drum you can really create a great variety of sound. They wear out pretty quickly however, so what I do is, I rotate the head on the drum by 90 degrees after like a month and isn’t possible to rotate even once more with 45 degrees. I wouldn’t do the 4th position because the head is pretty loosened oud at that pont so it’s not really a good sound by then even for practicing. But for this price it’s really good that you can use for like 3 months while practicing on it every day.

I've been playing Remo coated ambassadors for about 15 years and have really put them to the test through touring and gigging vigorously over the last 10 years. I've tried many drumheads and I always come crawling back to this one. This is my go-to head on my snare and toms for general playing, band practice, recording and playing shows. I've never had a problem with durability or chipped coating. I'm not a light hitter either. For me it works for pretty much any style of music because it has, IMO, the perfect combo of stick definition, warmth due to the coating and openness. I'm not going to say it's any better or worse than the competitors' equivalent because that really comes down to taste I'd say. So, pros include everything aforementioned and I really can't think of any...

So, I put this head on my Starphonic Alluminium snare and I got sound I dreamed about. I tuned it very high. Sound is perfect combination between dark and clear. It has some kind of depth to it even when tuned high. When I smash rim shot, ussualy with high tuned heads you will feel that rimshot in your ears and head but with this head when I rimshot I can feel it in my chest like you can feel bass drum kick when your standing in front of one. I never thought some drumhead can behave like this in high tunning. Best buy this year for sure!
Remo 14" Emperor X Coated Dot

For my needs this head from Remo represents the best overall choise. I want a batter head for my Sonor Prolite 14x6 Maple snare that brings the drum into the world of rock 'n roll. I want punch, a bit of low end and lots of mid tone from the beautiful Sonor shell, and I want some top end as well without too much overtones. So in combination with a thin Remo reso head and a Puresound EQ12 this batter head gives me exactly what i want. Highly recommended if you want a snare with a full bodied and powerfull sound.
Remo 14" Ambassador Coated Set

My friend recommended I use this as my resonant head for a better sounding bass drum in the jazz idiom, so this is generally what I use it for. It sounds best to me when tuned high and tight. Deciding which head to purchase solely depends on what kind of sound you want. If you want a "fat" low pitched sound for instance,a pinstripe ebony works well. But if you want a bright "punchy" sound, then this head will suffice. The standard batter head is the powerstroke 3 (which is a good head to start with); but once you've developed an ear for it, i supposed you can begin to deviate from that as well.
Evans B14HD 14" Snare Drum Head

A really nice balance of responsiveness, sensitivity and warmth, without too many overtones and ringing, so that you can often get away without any dampening. I think it suits any genre of music, but obviously it is a little less responsive for jazz, (although I do play jazz with it.) I wanted to try this out as I prefer not to dampen the heads and in this regard I'm happy with how it sounds when recorded. It's also easy to tune and get the best out of the snare. So far it appears very durable, after three months of regular playing it is only showing minimal signs of use. Highly recommend and I would buy again.
