It does the job

For near camera video recording is fine.

Average sound, cheap materials

The Rode VideoMicro has a decent sound, but really poor finishes. Right out of the box, Rode mics are always scratched or scuffed or unglued. Very poor quality check. Unreliable

Excellent in some circumstances

I wanted to get an external mic for my DSLR that would "just work", without battery power or other hassles. This one does, at least when the camera is stationary. The audio quality is superb and handles voices great, even some simple instruments or small gigs can sound decent.

The mount is unfortunately quite flimsy. I've noticed it can cause a lot of noise if you move the camera around too much, which is really a shame. If the microphone end gets accidentally screwed off a bit it will add some very unpleasant metallic sounds as well. Might sound rare, but this can happen quite easily when putting on the (otherwise excellent) windshield.

But for the price, this is a steal, and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a simple audio setup - especially if most of your shots are stationary. Just be sure to test moving it a bit before using it to capture any crucial audio.

Nice and compact

Suprisingly good low frequency respond!

I would not consider this micro

Bought it for Sony action cam, totally disappointed.

Better to have active lavalier mic. My subjective opinion.

Rode VideoMicro

Small, very discreet. A great fast & simple option for vlogging outside in public.

Tiny and powerful mic.

Useful and compact microphone. Thanks to its size it's very good for travelling. Quality of the audio is much better then just with an integrated microphone of my camera. Even in windy weather its doing fine. And the price is very good.

Standby mic for all occasions

I use many different microphones of various professional level and therefore I can compare the sound. This microphone certainly will not replace the more expensive and professional microphones (including

mics in Rode assortment). This mic is rather a lightweight and compact backup device that can always be with you and which can be used, for example, in windy weather. Both for the camera and for the smartphone. However, if you need really high-quality clean and beautiful sound - get ready to fork out for more expensive versions.

Great product

I use it for recording all kinds of videos with my Canon EOS M50. It really improves the sound quality SO much and I am so happy with this purchase. I also use it while hiking so the small size is also a great advantage for me. Very happy with this purchase.

Best value for money

Metal quality construction, small and light, very good sound and all that for under 50 euros? Nothing beats that!

Great for run and gun shooting

Use:

on top of GH3, plugged in directly

plugged into to Zoom H5 using Rode VXLR+ adapter, for boom pole micing

Pros:

Cheap

Low noise floor, probably lower than on-board camera mic pre-amps

No extra battery needed

Solid enough build quality

Cons:

attaching the cable to the camera stand mount is an additional part of the shockmount, and needed otherwise the mic will lean back and forth.

Mic picks up some focusing noise, even with shockmount.

Big Sound in Small Size

I can't praise this microphone enough. It's so easy to use and returns stunning audio quality with very little effort. It's lightweight and compact design makes it a no brainer to take out to any video shoot whether you're an amateur or professional.

My only criticism would be of the holder for the microphone. If you move around a lot, it moves a lot as well and some of that movement gets translated into sound disturbance in the recording. I would have loved it to be a bit more rigid.

The Mic for Phones

I use this microphone to attach to my smart phone and improve the sound when I am shooting music videos. I shoot outside in nature and in venues when I am playing live. It seems best when recording small volumes, without too much outside interference. Acoustic guitar, trumpet, etc.

I don't own a camera or DSLR but I know it works on them too. I have a mobile tripod (Tarion Multifunction Ball Head Mini Tripod) with a cold shoe mount on it so the phone sits in the tripod and the microphone sits snugly on top of the tripod in the mount. The microphone points forwards, the phone screen backwards.

So onto the actual microphone. It definitely improves the quality of the sound from a normal phone microphone. The microphone needs to be fairly close to isolate the sounds you want. I have shot in wind with the pop-shield and it really reduced the wind noise. I wouldn't record a band with this mic really. But speaking, interviews, live acoustic stuff, definitely.

You cannot monitor the sound or change the input volume which is a shame, and perhaps the only con I can find for this mic. Maybe with the correct app it would be possible. Bear in mind, it is a small mic. It's reach is not massive. You could reduce the distance by attaching it to a mic stand and using an extension from the mic to your recording device. Rode makes all the various cables you need. I bought an extension and another type of converter. Nowadays it is not simple jack to jack. There are various options of jack, TRS, TRRS etc. Smart phones need a TRRS normally and the mic needs a normal TS connection. So make sure you do some research into what connections your device needs.

Overall, I am super happy with it. Great build quality. Rugged. Amazing pop sheild and mount. Is perfect for small projects.
