Sennheiser E 602 II Reviews
My fav kick drum mic for Metal
Almost mix ready eq curve, it works better for me than the usual suspects ( B52, D6, D112 ) . Love it!
Modern Bass Drum Sound
Fat and bright tone modern bass drum sound. Solid, lighter than expected : probably made out of plastic, but will last a very long time anyway. Sounds better than a B52 (IMO), but not as versatile as the old classics (RE20/421, etc.).
Super Mic all round
Features: it is a microphone, so it doesn’t have many, but the fact that it screws onto a stand rather than having to use a clip makes life so much easier.
Sound: I upgraded to this from an AKG D112, and I wasn’t really expecting much of an improvement. One of my band mates actually recommended it to me. But playing live and recording with it, there’s so much low end that just wasn’t there with the AKG. It’s also much fuller sounding.
Quality: feels great, metal build, nice and heavy. 5 stars all over, especially for the price.
over all amazing mic
In my opinion this is the best contemporary sounding kick mic there is. Not flat at all, has great punch without any eq at all and all the bass you could wish for at the same time, and has no weird thing going on that has to be scooped out.
Have been looking for a kick mic for quite a while now, looking at reviews , listening to samples, and as with any internet purchase had my doubts, but since i put it in my bass drum, there is no more doubts at all, this is the best mic out there. I have 18" bass drum and it has everything to make it as big as i want to.
Don't quite like the plastic, but other than that great, if not the best mick im my opinion for low end.
Great budget kick/bass cab mic
Have been using these for over 15 years (Inc version 1)
Sold one to a venue and the house engineer has been happy with it.
Inexpensive, hard wearing, tidy, light.
Used alone it gives a decent result on kick/floor tom. Also useful for bass cabs.
On a small PA there's not a hugely noticeable difference between it and it's 900 series sibling.
Does the job!
Satisfied
Got what I was looking for!
Favourite kick mic
My favourite kick mic by far. Have use the Shure beta91 a lot of times, The ATM250, the Heil PR48 , Audix D6 and all the others, but every time i had a E602 on the kick, the kick just worked, a lost of times i just used a bit off low cut to 30(ish) and the tweaking was done.
Great kick mic
Great kick mic for more modern sound and live sound, requires less eq cleaning and mid scooping than the Shure beta, and has a better more pronounced kick sub and beater high sound. Recommend!
Good bass drum mic
For cheap price the best quality of bass mic on market
Using these for bass recordings
It's my favourite Microphone for bass recordings.
It's perfect, it's the best sounding mic out of the ones I've used to record bass. I also use it for the bass kick of the drums!
Built-in modern kick sound
The audio profile is quite scooped and on a kick drum, this results in a punchy, modern sound. Emphasis is on the attack and low end, the mids are not very present at all. If you're looking for an easy way to achieve a good, modern, punchy rock/metal kick sound, this will do the trick with almost no need for processing. However, if you want a versatile microphone or a more natural/vintage sound, you might prefer other options. For me, this was a clear choice over the standard D112 or Beta91.
Build quality is high - it's sturdy and seems road-worthy. The cable connection is solid and placement is okay. You may have to pay extra attention to where the cable sits if you want to place the mic inside the kick through a port on the front, but I guess that may be an issue with any mic at certain positions.
Turn it up - sounds great
This mic is basically pre eq'd for a fat, punchy sound with a good bright click too. Obviously you can eq back the other way - but there's little point mucking around too much with it. Just sounds good out of the box with a good helping of gain and a little gating. Works as well either inside against the batter head, or poking in the sound hole from the front. Won't be going back to my trusty AKG D112 - that sounds like a wet fart in comparison.
Good relation price/quality. Sought that body is heavier.
Great bass drum mic, especially for the price
Best bang for buck
Possibly the best balance of quality vs price in bass drum applications. Very durable
My kick drum sound
I was looking for a relatively inexpensive solution to record demos in our rehearsal place. I was (still am) really specific about the kick drum sound I want to achieve: Modern punchy rock sound, with enough low end, without getting too much click sound at highs like a metal record would have. After 3 years of using this mic I can say I have found the best solution for my taste without busting the bank.
When it comes to drums I record it with 4 or 5 mics, using close mics only on the kick and snare. I get the best result on the kick with the E 602 II just slightly inside the port hole facing the beater. I get that "in the face kick" sound I need. It certainly has a character that is not for everyone, but for me It is perfect without the need of a subkick.
On the plus side, when we record the drums separately, I can use this one on the bass cabinet too. It gives a nice clean and powerful sound, but I would never use this mic alone when I want raw punk style bass sound.
Now the downsides:
I have some problems with the screw that holds the mount part. It is too loose or too tight. So when i set the position of the mic with the stand, a screwdriver comes handy to fix it in the right place and make sure it stays there during the session.
There is another thing I have found problematic in build quality after a while. The XLR connection lets the cable come out just enough cut the sound, but it is visually unnoticeable. It took me a little time to realize that it's not my sound card or the cable that causing the cutouts. Knowing that I just double check the connection before pressing the record button, and mostly everything is fine.
This two problems I have would not stop me buying this mic again, and the second one would come with us on tour. It looks and feels like it can handle abuse really well, but first of all: This mic gives me closest sound to what I want on the kick drum than the other industry standard kick drum microphones that are mostly used around here in venues or mid priced studios where my hobby band could go.
Great mic
EQ'd kick mic, plenty of low end and sub content. The most out of any kick drum mic.
I do not like sennheisers plastic-y manufacturing but the mic is great!
Great mic for bass drum ;)
Very reliable mic with great sound ;)
Good sounding bass drum mic. Pretty strongly voiced, not a neutral tone. Scooped mids and extra punch in both highs and lows, so perhaps not the most suitable sound for acoustic jazz. Surprisingly big mic, my mental image was from the smaller similar shaped Sennheiser mics.
Awesome
One of my favourites in a kick, best one available for the price. Much nicer than a Beta 52/D112, every bit as good as the Audix D6, and more durable
