Thomann Melodica Reviews
Brilliant for the price
I love this little melodica. Such fun to play even for beginners. Sounds great in the hands of a practiced keyboardist. And at this price, I'll just keep buying them when they break.
Cheap, good and many keys
This melodica is a very nice piece of gear. It sounds quite a lot like it's more expensive brother from Höhner, in fact I bet many people wouldn't be able to tell much a difference. The low notes are sometimes a little bit harder to sound, so you need to blow harder.
I use it in my home studio and in bandpractise to play reggae and dub. Also is a funny sound on gigs, especially played together with another melodica.
Bottom line, if you ain't got too much to spend and want to try one of these, this is probably your best buck's worth. The höhner melodica feels just a little bit better when playing, but this is only noticed when playing for extensive time and when playing chords.
This melodica does very well as a solo instrument.
Edit: It has a detuned C note in the middle after a couple of month and some other notes are also getting out of tune. Luckily I found a tutorial online how to fix the using a small file.
Melodious Melodica
With regards to melodicas in general I find they are comparable to salt. A little can add just that perfect something that just brings everything together. Too much and everything is ruined.
As melodicas go this is one is great! It comes in a perfect little case and all the paraphernalia and accoutrements you need.
Worth the price, but might not last too long
I have played this melodica for a year as a joke, and now one note has become noticeably out of tune. I guess, I should have taken care of the cleaning instead of letting the salive dry out by itself. On the other hand, the price is so low, that I can't really complain.
Nice little instrument.
I play a lot of indie/folk music, and I find this to be an excellent accompaniment to an acoustic guitar sound. It gives you an accordion like sound with less skill required. This melodica is rather sturdy and seems to be quite reliable.
Super sound
This was the first melodica I bought and I've taken it to sessions to play in public. It was easy to play with a super sound. It is still in tune after two years. It was this instrument that made me fall in love with the melodica, so portable to take out to play and such a nice sound. I've since bought a very expensive Suzuki melodica but I still play this one from time to time.
It's a mediocre melodica. Cool for the kids or just for fun, but for it's price you can not really expect something better than that. After one month of esporadic usage, it starts to go out of tune. And to retune it you have to check out the reeds and their length, to see if they have moved and such. Not really worth to take it to a professional to do it for this price. You'll still be able to play it, but while playing chords, it will sound really bad!
It really is more like a toy than an instrument.
Lots of fun
It's a pretty fun instrument, and very versatile. I am no expert on this, nor on a normal piano, but all I can say is that it's a lot of fun and makes a loud noise, so its worth every penny
Melodica
Bought this because we were inspired by Joe Jackson's use of one on 'Geraldine and John'.
Makes a great keyboard sound when you can't play - or afford - keyboards!
Used it live and for recordings - a staple in our analogue effects box - along with the rain stick, sleigh bells and parrot!
One day we'll learn to play it properly!
Easy to play, nice features
I bought the melodica 1 year ago and can now hopefully write something useful about it. For me as a guitar player, I like the concept of simplicity here, hehe. The small sleeve is a nice addition if you want to put the melodica on the table for some time and so you better concentrate on playing with both hands.
What I didn't like about it was that some keys aren't really in tune, but that's actually what I expected of an instrument in that price range.
And be aware of breathing enough when you want to play more than 3 keys at once!
Does its job :)
I got this for our bands album production. We needed a really quirky and somewhat cheap sound for an intro and an outro, plus we didnt want to spend lots of money for a keyboard that could do the job. The first one we got was out of tune by almost half a tone. I called the customer service and they sent me a new one without asking further questions. They didnt even want the old one back. Thats great!
The one we got then was spot on and sounded exactly as we wanted it to sound, which wasnt really that good :) We wanted it to sound cheap. Like a childs toy and the melodica delivered. Now we use it for live gigs as well and we're still satisfied with the quality, although it does feel somewhat cheap, but I dont expect it to feel like a really expensive melodica.
A fine first Melodica
I am not a melodica expert, more an accordionist; for me the response of this melodica is slightly uneven and the reeds do not always give a sharp attack compared to reeds in an accordion. Overall it is good value for the low price, but if you want expert performance it may be worth looking at other models.
