TritonAudio FetHead Reviews
Essential for Rode Procaster
Without this little guy, it's pretty touch and go what kind of quality I will get out of a mixer with the Rode Procaster. The Procaster is gain hungry, and without some kind of help results in background noise in recordings. I bought this, attached it, and boom - clean tone. I have used this with the Procaster and a Steinberg UR22, Zoom H6n, and a Rodecaster Pro. Even the Rodecaster Pro, which supposedly has decent preamps, needed the help of the Fethead. So: if you have a Rode Procaster, I would say it's almost essential that you get this to go along with it.
Use with certain dynamic microphones in certain circumstances
I bought the two Fethead Phantoms for use with a pair of condenser microphones that were of good quality but were under performing on output and required a boost. Having looked at the Triton Audio product range on their website I decided to buy a Fethead (for Dynamic microphones) as a prerequisite to buying a Shure SM7 which competent reviewers said needed a microphone preamp.
In the event the SM7 was not purchased, however I found myself in a situation where I decided at short notice to mike an acoustic guitar not with a condenser microphone as planned but using a Shure SM57.
Essentially I was recording a small group of singers, singing sea shanties, one of whom played the acoustic guitar and sang along at the same time.
The Triton Audio Fethead did precisely what it was meant to do and lifted the output level of the Shure SM57 to a level on a par with the condensers that covered the vocals. In the event the signal was a little ahead of the level required for a guitar to be heard in background and the level was cut back in post-production. I feel sure that cutting back is much more preferable than boosting and introducing any unwanted noise.
I am therefor very pleased with the Fethead and will continue to use it regularly in similar circumstances.
A must have for any SM7B
This piece of equipment does wonders for a Shure SM7B. I can definitely recommend it!
Lifts the signal up and does what it says.
I haven't noticed any change other than an improved signal.
What brings the Shure SM7B to life
I bought it for an SM7B. On first listen, the 55 dB preamp (Rodecaster Pro) brought it to life, but at the time I hadn't heard what this mic could do when there was plenty of gain above 60 dB. But not only can this preamp be used for hungry microphones, it's also perfect for noisier preamps. Dynamic microphones stay super quiet this way, with no background noise filtering in.
Does the job & small footprint!
I bought this head with an sm7b and this works like a charm. Boosts my signal and doesn't raise the noise floor (At least from what I hear).
It is a very small preamp so I'd advise folks to be careful if you are going to be constantly taking it out of your mic as it is very easy to lose.
Good Preamp
Used with sm7b with no problems great clean boost for a quiet mic.
good and natural
This is good but I want more gain a little bit. but still, This is good.
Excellent
I did not expect a little piece to have such a nice features and quality. Excellent addition to my Shure sm7b. Recording has become easier and simpler, provides and extra going and tone compared to condenser mics I have tried. I love my Shure sm7b even more and prefer it over other mics I have. Will recommend it for sure
Great for boosting a SM7b or ribbon microphones.
Sounds as good as the Cloudlifter to my ears and gets the job done at a much lower price. Note that if you plug it directly in the microphone it will protrude in an awkward way, but that can easily be solved by putting a short XLR cable in between. Still better than the big clunky box of the Cloudlifter.
Great work from TritonAudio
Ultra low noise as described. Works great with the SM7B.
I highly recommend FetHead for use with any mic and preamp combination for the extra boost!
When using either a Shure SM7B into an Audient ID4 interface, I was having issues getting the gain high enough without introducing terrible amounts of hiss into the equation while doing some voiceover work. Adding the FetHead into the mix allowed me to back way off of the gain side as well as the output level and get pure, clean sound with little to no hiss. Great little device that can give clarity and gain for your mic.
Very good preamp for that price. You can easily plug it or unplug it for the road.
Solid
It's ok, but found a bit better than this which would be the SE Electronics Dynamite DM1
Sounds good!
A very good aquisition for dynamic/ribbon microphones! The unique thing that I am recommending to you is to connect the unit with 2 xlr cables, I personally don't like the direct mount methode...More class with 2 cables...
Does what its supposed to do!
I use this for my SM7B to increase the incoming gain, i dont see any cons with this device, though some people say that it changes the tone of the microphone but i have no way of confirming this. To me it sounds great. One of the pros is definitely the price compared to other devices that do the exact same job.
No complaints but not awesome
It works. I prefer to the cloud lifter to this.
Great and efficient mic Pre
I recently bought this pre for a rather silent Shure sm7b, most audio interfaces in the market can't properly drive the mic without introducing a fairly consistent amount of noise. The Fethead boosted the signal by 27db, which is a more than decent amount to achieve a clean and trasparent recording. I would highly suggest it first of all for its simplicity and size. It's a great no-nonsense pre that will do exactly what it says. I'll look forward to test it with my other dynamic mics.
Very very good
Absolutely no loss of quality and a good boost in volume. Exactly what I expected.
Bang for your buck
Use this with the shure sm7b. Gives a nice clean gain!
Even though some youtube videos say you don't need it when you have a decent audio interface. With my behringer 404, it really is needed. Without this preamp, I have to crank it fully open and it still isn't loud enough.. (Also with full gain and no fethead, I do get noise! )
So this is the most cost efficient solution I've found!
Another benefit to other options is it's size. Portable, not in your way.
Made for the SM7B
This guy and my SM7B are a match made in heaven.
I used to have to crank my gain for my SM7B and was always getting noise from the pre but not anymore!
Consider getting this if you have a low output mic like an SM7B or a ribbon mic because unless you have a quiet pre (ie, expensive), chances are you could be getting noise that you could easily reduce
