Great product!

PROS

1. Sound quality. Highs are crisp, but not too bright; mids are good; bass is punchy and tight. It is difficult to find *better* sounding headphones in this price segment.

2. Build. They are very solidly built and ergonomics are great. There is no complex suspending system, so there is nothing to break.

3. Very comfortable. The new ear pads are very soft, and the headband is enveloped in the same soft material.

4. Portability. Both cups rotate horizontally 180°, and they fold vertically, to make the headphone's dimensions quite small and portable-friendly.

5. ATH-M50X have got three detachable cables: a long straight one (you can use it to connect to a source that is further away), a short straight one (very handy when connecting to a smartphone, or if your computer is located very near to where you sit), and a medium-length coiled one (for mixed purposes). The insert-and-turn locking system secures the cable to the left cup.

6. These are closed-back headphones, so you can use them in a room, filled with people, without the need to worry that you might disturb someone or be disturbed by someone.

CONS

1. Cable connectors are proprietary. But then again you get three cables in the box.

2. At 285g plus the cable, the ATH-M50X are a little heavier than similar-sized headphones.

Excellent piece of equipment

Just got these today and I gotta tell you - they're worth every penny spent. Solid build, fantastic set (comes with three removable cables and a pouch) and, most importantly - crystal clear sound. An absolute must-have for all fellow mixers (or just avid music lovers) out there!

Clarity and punch

Clichéd as it may sound these phones pack a lot of punch whilst giving clarity to a wide range of frequencies. Now, I'm no studio engineer but I do know sound and of all headphones I've used so far these are by far the best.

Good sturdy quality with quite a bit of flexibility as well though folding them together is not without some force. Personally that's not a problem but for quick hiding away you might have a hard time. They might soften up a bit, that remains to be seen. They also look bulkier (they're actually quite slim) and heavier (not super light but still) than they are. If you have a larger head I can imagine that they might clamp on a bit strong but even there they might soften up. I wouldn't know.

Good over-ear fit with barely any leakage from the phones, also due to not having to drive the volume so hard as they fit snugly over the ears which keeps the outside world away.

A neat detail is how the cable locks to the left phone with a little snap. I imagine this might be more handy for the commuter than the engineer but handy it is.

The three cables provided are also of good quality and everything comes with a standard issue leather pouch for safe keeping.

Sound wise I am very satisfied. Maybe not so surprised as these sound exactly as I thought and expected but nevertheless I am very satisfied. I've gone through different styles of metal, electronic music, classical music and the generic pops and rocks. Source sounds require very little eq adjusting but maybe some. Some stuff was a bit on the bass heavy side for me but most was just perfect.

All in all I am very happy with this product. The price is remarcable for what you're getting and I recommend these phones to anyone (especially commuters) interested in a good listening experience. Clichéd as it may sound.

Bang for the bucks

These headphones are among the most neutral closed cans in this price-range. I use them for practise with a Kemper Profiling guitar-amp, as an alternative to studio-monitors in my home-studio, and as mixing tool for live FOH mixing-jobs.

Great Product

Apart from the fact that they can be a little more comfortable to wear, these headphones are amazing - good, clear sounds, and flat. I use these headphones for listening to my drumming, or sometimes to listen to my master coming out of my Yamaha MG-16XU mixer. When not jamming/recording, I use them to listen to my music.

Great quality, great sound

Absolutely fantastic set of headphones. I also own a pair of DT100s and they surpass them in both sound quality and comfort. Great padding makes them comfortable on your ears over longer periods and the detachable cable makes them easy to store. All around sound quality is excellent, although they can be quite loud which could potentially lead to some misrepresentations while mixing audio however this can be tackled very easily.

Very comfort

I really enjoy working with those headphones. They are comfort and accurate. I've been using previously Sony pro headphones and these headphones sound quite same but seem more durable. Changeable cables option is handy. I would reccomend those for music lovers and for sound engineers.

Brilliant!

Never again can I just listen to just any ol' pair of headphones. The ATH-M50X's sound great and if you're making your first step into getting better quality listening equipment, you can't go wrong with these.

They're are great for listening to a diverse range of music, watching movies/t.v. shows, playing video games, and even work well for producing music. They're colored in the Lows and Highs so I would recommend checking a mix across a few different output sources other than the headphones just to make sure that you're not being lead astray.

They're very comfortable, having very soft pads for your ears; and provide a pretty firm grip on your head. This does result in a bit of discomfort after having them on your head for over a few hours but the discomfort quickly subsides after taking a break for a few minutes.

I really like the selection of cables. The bag is great for holding everything you need whilst traveling, and the headphones themselves fold up into a compact unit.

I've owned these headphones for almost two years and never been disappointed while using them. I also have no desire to upgrade to anything else. At this price-point, considering the amount of use I've gotten of of them, they are an incredibly good investment.

Great for studio ant unbeatable on field.

I have two pairs of the older brothers (ATH-M50) of these headphones. Built quality is very good and they have withstand three years of hard work in the live audio field and quite many studio sessions. I should buy new ear pads soon, as they have worn out, but other than that they still look and sound as they were new. I have used several other headphones, for example Sony MDR7506 which are a broadcast standard, but ATH-M50 will beat them easily with built quality and sound.

But when I come back to the new sibling ATH-M50 X then this model has quite an advantage from the older model... There are two older models, one is with coiled cable and the other with 3m straight cable. Bot are quite nasty, one is messy and the other is too long and always in a way if you are working behind your mixer. The new ATH-M50 has three cables for every situation: 1,2 m coiled cable, 1,2 m and 3m straight cable. So you can choose whatever you like.

It is important to mention that they are quite comfortable to use for long mixing sessions as they do not give too much pressure to the head and ears.

Excellence and comfort at an affordable price

Having done my research, and consulted several studio musicians and sound technicians, I decided that AudioTechnica were likely to be the best value for money in my budget range (<£100).

I visited my local music store to find that they could only supply ATH-M30x headphones. Armed with my Macbook, I tried them out with a variety of >320kbps MP3s, and WAV file recordings taken with either my Yamaha PocketTrak W24 or the Rode app on my iPhone 5s.

I was suitably impressed by the ATH-M30x headphones, so I decided that buying the ATH-M50x was probably a safe bet. I was right.

My first impression of the ATH-M50x headphones was that the bass was present and clear, but never overdone or 'boomy'. The mid- and treble-range tones were crystal clear, as though I were standing among the instruments or vocalists!

The construction is solid (unlike some headphone sets that are in the same price range), and feels well-built.

The earpad comfort is wonderful. I wear glasses, which often leads to discomfort, but so far these headphones have been a joy to wear for prolonged periods of time (i.e. >4 hours).

Three removable cables come in the box with the headphones. The shortest cable has been perfectly fine for all of my usage so far (mixing / listening on Macbook or listening/monitoring/recording on PocketTrak W24 / iPhone).

The headphones fold away neatly, which puts the earpieces together in a protective contact. The carry bag is thick enough to suggest that it will last a good while, but thin enough to be pliable and soft.

Overall, these headphones are fantastic. Unless you're used to headphones priced much higher than these, you're sure to be pleased if you buy them.

Fantastic Headphones

The sound quality is SUBLIME. They are very comfortable. Great price. The build quality and aesthetics are great - sleek, matte black finish with brushed metal (probably steel or aluminium) highlights.

I would seriously recommend these headphones to musicians, sound engineers, djays, and the casual listener who loves great sound quality and detail.

Built quality is awesome. Realy, i owned one of Shure headphones , the price was around 70-80 euros, sound quality wa good, but all was made of plastic. These ones are better in build quality.

About sound - for me sound is clear , there are no boosts in low or hi-end.

Plus, shure gives you 3 cables in different sizes.

I bought there ones for tracking, and home rec mixing. Right now all works just fine.

Other thing is absorbation which in this situation ar really great too.

I recommend these ones for all pro audio lovers, You can do both - mix and record tracks in all kind of situations.

Best headphones for its pricerange!

The Audio-Technica ATH M50 X is one of the better headphones i've used, and it has superior quality in sound at the high's mid's and lows.

The M50 X has fairly flat and accurate sound which is perfect for monitoring

your mix or just listening to your favorite track!

One of the cool futures with these headphones is the detachable cable that allows

you to choose between the 3 different cables that comes with it. That also makes it

easier to pack away the headphones in the pouch that is included, when traveling.

Very good sounding headphones

I bought these headphones in addition to my AKG K271 MKII for recording and listening. I have to admit that I am very impressed with the sound, look and overall quality of these headphones.

The bass response is very dynamic, powerfull, but not overblown or boomy, its like having a good woofer. My first impression was that bass is too strong, but I was used to my bass "light" AKG's.

The highs are clean and clear, and the midrange is quite nice (I still have to admit that the midrange on AKG's is the best, at least to me)

The ear pads seem small, but the surround my bigger than average ears nicely and can be worn for long periods of time (I had them on for couple of hours straight without discomfort).

Build quality and aesthetics are very nice to, altough they are plastic (but very nice, quality plastic, they have integrated metal on important flexible parts for strength.

They are not as isolated as AKG's, but still good enough for live recording and monitoring.

Overall very very good headphones, especially for this price range and probably beter than some in higher.

M50x a good upgrade to the solid M50 headphones

I've been using a pair of the regular Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones for a few years now and have been very happy with their sonic response. They sound great and are not fatiguing to listen to for hours at a time which is crucial for musicians who need to practice or record using headphones. However I wear glasses and found that over time it would get quite uncomfortable to have the headphones pressing my glasses against my head for long periods.

Thankfully the new M50x headphones have vastly improved ear pads. They are much softer and I now am able to wear my glasses and these headphones for long periods of time in comfort. The overall construction of the M50x also appears to be slightly improved, and the new detachable cable is a great idea. Sonically they appear to sound the same or very similar - my other pair has had countless hours of use so I guess these will slightly change over time however they sounded pretty great right out of the box. The only slight negative is that they have used an end connector sleeve that isn't a standard size so that it can lock in to the headphones, meaning that you couldn't easily make a replacement cable without using the proper connector sleeve. The headphones are ideal for using when tracking vocals or acoustic guitars as they are closed back and do not leak a lot of sound.

If you own regular M50s and are happy with the comfort I would probably not worry about buying the M50x headphones unless you need to buy a second pair. However if you were considering purchasing a pair of M50s I'd definitely recommend going straight for the M50x instead. Very nice closed back headphones indeed!

Most comfortable and best sounding Headphones for price

These literally are the best headphones in this price range. It actually feels like I have gotten something for nothing.

I have worn them for 6 hours yesterday and today I am on my second hour and they are still sitting perfectly and sounding great.

The sound is fantastic. I use pro tools and logic and I think Logic has a tendency to sound muddy naturally, so when i listen with these headphones and brighten up the tracks and bounce out it works perfectly and sounds great on my HS80m speakers.

A great set with 3 different sets of cables you cant go wrong. I would definitely recommend these just for listening the odd time on as for me they tie in very well with my monitors.

I was also worried about the tightness of the headphones as some have said the old athm50's were very tight when they got them. These were not tight and the headband is very stretchy but sit firmly.

The only problem i have with headphones is wearing glasses. Its not comfortable but I think I should probably get laser eye surgery anyway so maybe it wont matter next year.
