Shure Beta 91A 5-stars Reviews
The one and only 91
This is now my go to mic for kick drum, is great when mic'ing in and out but equally stands it ground when just mic'ing in. Has great amount of attack when used on kick and can reacts very differently when using different placements within the kick drum. The eq cut can be handy if limited on eq options by mixing desk. Surprisingly good results if you stick it on the floor when recording, is good at picking up the sound of a room realistically. Also got good results inside a piano also in a live situation. A must for evey microphone pack!
excellent
If your serious about your craft and sound well this is the BAss drum mic for you! So simple.. no messing sround with positioning and your lead singer falling over stands! Just simply place it in the bass drum and Boom! Its so easy and sounds amazing. The EQ button is a great feature.
Great mic, great price
I purchased this Beta 91 to be the kick in mic on my band's kit (to use with a 52a). It sounds great. It gives a defined, punchy sound. There is a switchable EQ filter on the base which gives a cut around 400hz I believe, to remove any 'boxiness' to the sound. Leaving this out you have a more linear EQ. Response otherwise is 20-20k.
Sturdy and heavy, this mic feels very well built. It has a rubber base to help keep it stable and reduce vibration. It also has a proper XLR connector in the body - no mini XLR or other flimsy connectors, which is great.
Outstanding microphone
I upgraded my microphone setup for my kick drum from a PG52 to the Shure Beta 91A and I was highly impressed by the amount of low end punch this microphone delivers. Much easier to work with in a live situation and have gotten plenty of compliments from those who've listened out front to it at gigs. Even sound engineers at venues and in studios have echoed that sentiment. It just allows for a much more precise, clear, low end sound. The frequency switch on the bottom is useful to fine tune your sound.
I give it five stars as a product, but four for features because by its nature, it's tricky to place in the kick drum without it moving around. You may need to look into a mounting solution to suit your needs within the drum to avoid it sliding around or knocking over. Consideration to padding in the floor of your drum may be a good, cheap solution though to this issue. Other than that, excellent microphone and delivers an awesome sound that you crave!
For the proper kick drum attack.
Because you but this mic inside of the kick drum it has really good separation from the outside noises, that means you can use gate really effectively. It has really tight bottom end and nice 10kHz attack. Usually they are used along with dynamic kick mic and blended together for fuller sound. My favourite technique is to use Beta91 inside kick drum and a Yamaha subkick outside near resonant head.
cajon
I am using it together with LP cajon mount on my schlagwerk cajon and it sounds great. i also have one for my kick drum together with beta 52. The engineer thinks its better with the mic steady mounted on the cajon like this
what a mic!
before i bout this mic i did a little resuch into it having only used it ones before so i took the purge and pieced one up. this mic is amazing when you take it out of the box you realise how good the bold of the mic is its like a tank its got a very good wait on it to so you know when you put it in your kik drum its not going to go walkiys its all so got rubber on the base of the mic for extra grip! this mic works for almost all gunras iff you what to add attack into your kik drum its perfect but its not to clicky (witch i like) with a little eq you could get your "mettle kik" use this mic with a beta 52 and your kik drum comes alive and sounds amazing! the only flore i found is that if your kik dosnt have a port in it's front skin its useless so you kik drum dose need to have a desunst sized port hole
Solid, reliable workhorse
Excellent for live kick drum micing - be sure to read the accompanying instructions as there are useful tips on placement within the kick drum (both in terns of distance from the skin/beater but also the ideal angle of origin of the sound source) & optimum positioning of monitors to avoid feedback.
The Contour Switch is a really useful feature - a low-mid scoop that genuinely does accentuate the low end and improve the attack of the high end.
Makes a good pairing with Shure's Beta 52a which will pick up more of the attack of the beater with the Beta 92A set with the flat response to maximise the warmth of the drum.
Nice flounder
I bought this microphone both for in ear monitoring (live as well as in rehearsals) and for recording the bass drum.
For monitoring I place the microphone in front of the drum set, the little switch on its backside set to linear. The result is a powerful bassdrum sound in front of everything else of the drum set. The guitars and bass are still hearable though - perfect for me.
Recording is even easier: flip the backside switch to mid-scoop, put the microphone into the bassdrum and you are set.
The big advantage over other non-boundary microphones in either situation is that the Shure Beta 91A does not require any microphone stand. Due to it's heavy build it even takes a guitarist stepping onto it (what, in fact, happens quite often).
Top class microphone with a powerful punch, also eliminates the need for a stand - (for the singer to knock over!)
