Superlux PRA D1 Reviews
Fantastic mic at a great price
Great microphone for vocals.
I have used sm58's and this mic is very comparable.
Good quality and it's great that a mic clip is also included
Robust microphone with powerful sound
I bought the Superlux PRA D1 mike as my first vocal mike in a homerecording setup.
It comes nicely packed in a plastic case and even a mic clamp is included.
First impression: it seems quite well made and is very heavy. The microphone capsule is unscrewable, which is nice for cleaning purposes etc.
I tried it in different recording situations (Growl, Hiphop, Spoken Word) an I can say that this microphone basically does a good job. The only downfall whith this microphone is an overemphasizing of high mids (in the 3-4 khz range), which is typical for mikes in this price category. A good amount of equalization is necessary, to give a good ?clean studio sound? - at least whith my low and raspy voice.
As the body of the PRA D1 seems not so well insulated, the mike is a bit susceptible to impact noise. It is s good idea to use a mic stand.
Conclusion:
Good first microphone, very robust, good price/performance ratio, cheap and reliable backup mike for rehearsal situations. It is advisable to use at least a decent mike preamp (which many even of the cheaper recording-soundcards nowadays have) for best results.
Fantastic for recording
This mike is just unbeatable for the price!
I have a small recording desk and this mike fits my use perfectly. I can record my acoustic guitars, my voice and even mike my amp (all through my Line 6 Pod Studio) and sound is excellent.
I haven't used this live so I don't know how it performs, but I would totally get it if I had my own live rehearsal room.
Bottom line: unlike other budget mikes that I had tested, this one is really something you will enjoy using. If you are starting or have a tight budget or want to equip your small studio or recording station, no need really to spend on an SM57 or 58, this is the way to go.
Excellent value for money
I cant rate this mic highly enough (for the money). I purchased it as a backup for other 'named' brand ones but was surprised at how well made it is and how good it sounds. Maybe on critical studio recordings you may notice differences or prefer an alternate but for general live duties (pub and club gigs) it is more than adequate. Build quality seems excellent too. Recommended.
You get what you pay for...
Bought this mic as a cheap backup for my SM58s and initially I was pretty impressed, considering the price. Sound quality was surprisingly clean and crisp, a little harsh and less refined than something like an SM58, but at the price it really isn't that far away from the much more expensive branded dynamic mics.
So initially was very pleased with the mic, so much so that I started using it as a secondary mic for gigs. After a few months use though, the XLR input broke, and when I took a look inside the connections were flimsy and not built to take any abuse - which you may need for a stage mic!
So overall - a good cheap backup mic, impressive sound for the price - but not very robust. If you treat it carefully, should be fine.
nice for the price
Wanted a dynamic vocal Mic as a back up for my gig bag. The band plays pubs, clubs and small venues. Didnt want to pay a fortune for a back up but needed something which was reliable in a live setting. Reviews were good for this. Have bought superlux stuff before so gave it a try. Good quality Mic which comes in case with Mic holder. Reasonable dynamic range pick up and clear through the pa with no noticeable background interference. Holds its own as a live vocal Mic with some of its more expensive competitors. As a back up, it's worth a buy.
Try them!
I bought a load of these and decided to used them for my Ableton assignment at university. I was soon bragging to everyone in class how cheap they are and they actually sound good!
They're clear audio quality and from what I can tell a good build quality (for the money) and I would happily use them live instead of my e845's for recording a metal or punk band... as I would rather give them cheaper mics because sometimes they can get carried away and start bashing them. Better to be safe than sorry, they've got a good top end frequency responce (can't get over the amount of clarity in them for the amount they cost, a toy microphone would be more expensive but I could actually record with these)
Alright, more expensive mics have a nicer eq to them BUT if you're starting out I would recommend these every single time to a friend. Couldn't be more impressed with them!
Superlux PRA D1 mic
I needed a back up mic in case I had problems with my TBone cordless. I needed one with NO On/Off button as that just causes problems, especially when a member of the public is using it...they fiddle!
Also I needed a quality mic for my guitar combo so I could put the signal through a desk.
This mic, for the price is really, really good! Heavy, robust and great sound. I am considering buying a few more as I would have no worries about hiring them out for the public to use as karaoke mics, or to bands wanting to mic up the drums/guitars.
All in all a great all round quality mic and at a very good price.
Super Superlux microphone!
Most impressed with this microphone, and even more so at the price. Bought as a backup vocal microphone, it is my second Superlux, (I also have the Harmonica mic'), and it does not disappoint in any way. Feels extremely well constructed, good weight, and the vocal reproduction is excellent. Case and clip also! Recommended.
Great quality
This microphone is great for recording vocals, don't let the price tag deceive you. The sound quality you can get out of this microphone is good enough for any home studio work or small gigs. I've also tried recording an electric guitar through an amp and it does the job just as fine. The clip that comes with it is not too sturdy, but everything else is great. It comes in a nice padded case for carrying around.
I'm in love
I thought I'd do a Proper review for you guys, since there doesn't seem to be that many good reviews online.
A bit of background for you first:
I am a professional musician/singer, and do 15 to 20 gigs a week. I also am sound engineer, and therefore I've been using sm58's since I started my life in music.
In case you didn't know, every engineer has a few sm58 mics, partially because they are the mic of choice for many artists, partially because their EQ is very familiar for an engineer, partially because they are INDESTRUCTIBLE which helps with careless musicians and singers (Especially Singers :P ), but mainly because we were told to use them.
Now as for the superlux PRA D1. I had never heard of it. I only found a couple of reviews, and it was difficult to find it on their site (it's on the .com.tw site, its not on the U.S superlux site, which looks like it was made by a preschooler to be honest). But for this ridiculously low price I thought I'd give it a shot. And boy, I am pleased to say that this mic works wonderfully on stage.
Since I, as a singer, only use the sm58 on stage I will compare the PRA D1 to that.
Sound: The sound is very similar to the sm58 but not identical, it has a slight boost in the bottom end, but it doesn't sound muddy through my system, just different (as one mic model sounds different to another). For my voice I use the eq to slightly roll off the 150 - 200hz mark (as I also do a little with the sm58) and the mic is almost perfect. The top end is a lot like the sm58, so no real sparkle, just a natural sound that rolls off around the 5k mark. In the studio, going through expensive monitors, you can hear the difference between the two mics, but on stage, through an EQ, you can make these two mics sound identical with very little EQ changing. Also I have no problems with feedback from the speakers.
Quality: The sm58 is definitely built better, but the PRA D1 is not far off. It feels very sturdy, the grill looks very protective (although I would like to know where I can get spare grills or whatever fits, I'll edit this when I find out). When it is handheld the sounds made by holding it are about 5% louder than holding the sm58, but only if you grip it really hard as the paint rubs against your skin, whereas the paint of the sm58 seems to slide against your skin even if you grip hard. 5% louder means nothing on stage.
Feature: Same features as an sm58, sturdy body, and no offswitch. The only main difference is you get these same features at UNDER A FIFTH OF THE PRICE! You could buy 5 PRA D1's and still have change left for the price of an sm58! Buy a spare grill for the sm58 is almost as expensive as this whole mic!!!
Overall I can say that I am happy with this mic, VERY happy. Don't get me wrong though, the sm58 has nothing to worry about. It is a great mic and has been used since the beginning of time itself, and will carry on being used, but if someone was to give me a superlux PRA D1 on stage I wouldn't be disappointed at all. In fact I would be thrilled that someone else knows about this mic!
Just so you understand how I feel (in case you haven't figured it out yet), at every gig I do I always have an sm58 with me, and I planned on using the PRA D1 for backups, spares, and for backing singers, but I find myself reaching for the PRA D1 every time I set up and start my show. That's how much I enjoy using this mic.
Seriously recommended.
Superlux PRA D1 Microphone.
I bought this to use as a practice/rehearsal microphone to save time taking the 'GIG' mikes out and replacing them.
Boy was I surprised. We tend to use Shure SM57 and SM58 mikes when on the road and always have, but in comparison to this microphone, the Superlux PRA D1 mike had more volume and a much warmer tone yet was still distinct and pure.
We tried this for vocals and for harmonica use as well and found it to be super on both counts. The microphone is solid and sturdy with a nice and heavy feel to it. The top mesh is strong and there was no need for a sponge 'POP' filter.
Overall this is a great product at an unbelievable price and one you would be able to take anywhere.
good response
a nice mic that was very responsive, very heavy but extremely durable, very usable as a backing mic for anyone playing small venues like pubs or small clubs, also used as an amplifier mic
A budget decent microphone.
In my humble opinion this microphone is very very similar to the Sansom Q7, in built quality and in performance, (it even looks like it!).
No on-off switch, and no cables included in package :-(
Exceptional bang for the buck
I actually bought this mic about 1.5 years ago when I was short on cash but really needed a microphone to record some vocals for demos at home. I did not expect too much from it - boy, was I wrong!
The chassis is made completely out of (thick) metal, this thing is built like a tank! Nice weight and it has a really reassuring feel to it. The jack locks nicely with the XLR plug and there's basically no mechanical clearance. In my experience, it is not particularly vulnerable to feedback. I guess it is some kind of SM58 clone but I'm not sure.
Sound-wise, I am just as satisfied. It works great for my harsh and clean vocals, be it in my home studio or in the rehearsal space. I once recorded an entire drum kit with just this one mic (the rest of the band went directly into the interface) in order to create rehearsal demos, and it captured everything quite well.
I'll probably buy another one soon to permanently keep it in our rehearsal space. For just 20€, you simply can't go wrong with this mic!
OK for the money...
This microphone may not be suitable for professional studio recordings, but for live situations it performs very well for the money. I've used it for vocals, drums and gutar amps and though I'm sure an SM58 or simikar may be better, I doubt the difference would be worth it at a noisy gig.
A sturdy functional budget mic
I purchased this as a rehearsal mic; & yet found myself using at live gigs for lead vocals & harmonica. Sturdy, responsive & well made, this is a perfectly competent mic at a very low price. Highly recommended!
Love these mics!
I think these mics are brilliant, I have been using 3 of these for the last few years and find them excellent quality and sound for the price. They feel weighty and well made to hold and sound fine. I use them with sm58s and they perform equally.
Unbeatable Value
For the money these are brilliant. Decent sound and virtually indestructible!!
