tc electronic Sub'N'Up Octaver Reviews
Best value octaver out there!
This pedal is so good! It's amazingly versatile and will be on my board for a long time! I love how you can connect it to the computer to further dig deeper into its functionality! The pedal knocks the competition out of the park!
i like it
well built pedal, the tone print is very cool
makes other band members smile every time
Not very using it much but it could bring some interesting moments to the song
tc electronic Sub'n'Up Octaver
this is a phenomenal pedal. many compare these to EHX micro POG. since I have owned both I can say they certainly aren't the same.
while micro POG is a beast of its own and a wonderful octave generator, to my ears it has slower tracking specially on lower tones. on high notes it produces the classic glitching tone which makes it suitable for dirty sounds and that's where it shines best.
on the other hand since I use this pedal in a very unconventional manner, I needed a very natural sounding octaver with less to no glitches and the Sub'n'Up Octaver exactly does that.
also instead of having both high and low signals in one pedal, I decided to separate them by using Sub'n'Up Octaver particularly for low octaves (sub1 and sub2) and for high octave I use Digitech Mosaic which is a specialized high octave generator.
now I have far more natural sounding octaves with complete control over the high and low tone and can switch from sub octave to octave above without bending or taking my hand off the fretboard :-)
luxury
Sub is great!
Up, not so much. Really. I can't find one useful purpose for making my bass sound like it's being doubled by a steel drum. Thought I'd try it to change my electric into a 12-string [ala the Digitech Mosaic] and get a 2-for-1 use out of it but SUCKS in the regard. Seriously, if it wasn't for the Poly mode and the excellent Classic Mode I would have sent it back. And don't get me started on their lame a$$ Tone Print settings. Maybe they'll get it worked out or not. Who cares I still like it for the reasons mentioned.
For Sax
Used this for a tenor sax with great results.
paired with the Superlux PRA-383D, simple set up. played around with settings and got some brilliant results. who needs 3 players in the brass section!?!
Tc deliver again
*Update
Great pedal. Compact and durable as expected from TC Electronic.
Stereo outputs would work great to split between a bass and guitar amp. For clarity I mean that using another pedal with stereo output for splitting the signal (i.e. Tuner/Looper or delay) its kind of a hack but was recommended to me by Tore from TC!
Pedal tracks well even with chords in poly mode
Tone prints are great if you don't know what they are you should check out the TC site or TonePrint app.
They can allow complete novices to get sounds that the pros use by beaming presets as if by magic (sounding like a dial up modem) through your guitar pickup
Pros
Build quality
Looks
Tracking of notes
TonePrint feature
Cons
None
I've seen some comparisons of this pedal with the EHX POG ou the Pitchfork, but this is a different thing. Sub ?n? Up is mostly about the sub octaves, and the upper octave is more of an extra feature. You can have only the oactave up, by rolling off the subs, but in my opinion the subs is where you can get the best sounds. And the the Toneprint feature takes this pedal apart from every octave pedal out there.
Positive: It's small enough and true bypass. Simple controls (dry, octave up, octave down, two octaves down). The option between polyphonic or classic adds a lot to the possibilities. The greatest feature is the Toneprint, wich allows you to customize the sound in tottaly new ways: sound like a synth, flanger, phaser, chorus, or everything in between.
Negative: I have this pedal for about a year now, and so far I have not encontered anything negative to account for.
Little sound of subsonic and hypersonic wall
Hell is this a nice pedal. I was looking for a nice octaver and I tried looking for a cheaper one, but if you go cheaper only thing what you will find is a decent monophonic octaver, and with a price increase of couple tens of euros you get a kickass monophonic and polyphonic with a toneprint switch for your fiddly diddling ( I got the default option and it plays like a an organ).
With the sub 1, sub 2, and up2, you cannot ask for more in a an octaver pedal.
An octaver that sets standards
I was looking for an octaver. The purpose I wanted to use it for was psychedelic elements in a heavy rock band. This little pedal had me astonished. With two options for sub-octaves and one for the upper octaves, it can create a full spectrum of sound. Hence, I started use it for other styles of music.
I haven't unlocked its full potential just yet, but so far so good. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid octaver.
Use with bass
I use it on my bass and it does a good job. This has an octave up as well which is the reason I bought it. I recommend it to bass players.
Great Octaver
Compact and robust pedal with tons of different sound modifying options.
Great one
Tc electronics sub'n'up octaver is a great unit which provides all the neccessary sounds.
I have had a EHX POG before this, but being a fan of TC products i decided to try this unit. Straight out of the box it feels great, and quality is top notch as always with tc pedals.
A great feature is the possibility to connect this pedal to a pc and tweak sound by hand, by this the pedal gives you limitless possibilities of octave sounds, and if you don't want to tweak anything, just use the tone print function and experience what tc guys think is a good sound.
There are three modes, poly mode is a mode in which it can track chords, this is a great feature, but the chord tracking is not the best, it tracks, but sometimes lower octaves get messy, POG tracks chords a bit better, although this is a small minus, this is not very noticeable, and doesn't affect play ability.
Second mode being tone print works fine and the pedal is pre-uploaded with an awesome organ sound.
Third mode is classic which can take only single notes, i would rather use polyphonic, although this mode has a bit more beefy octave sound.
Conclusion, a good octave pedal with lot of possibilities, recommended.
Great pedal, great price
The pedal has a lot of useful sounds, and is easy to use.
The 3 modes have distinct sounds. Poly is great for playing multiple strings at once and making interesting soundscapes. Classic is great for lead single note playing.
And the tone print mode give the option of scuplting your own sound by adding more effects like chorus.
All in all great pedal, built well and priced right.
Yet another great pedal from TC Electronic
After playing around with the Toneprints on my TC Electronic amp, I found that the octaver effects were awesome so decided to invest in this pedal to explore more possibilities and so glad I did. Not only can you layer the 2 sub-octaves and the higher octave but you can also add in further toneprints just to make the effects totally unique.
For a geek.. a stunning piece of kit - toneprints can be added via your pc or Mac, or via your mobile through the pickups.
if you do not want to dish out for electro harmonix...
This pedal is just awesome, probably even better than the micropog at half the pog's price, and with a little messing around on the dials you can achieve godly tones from a nice guitar..
Sure, the POG naturally has an unprecedented holy tone, but this sub'n'up octaver can take you places as well through trying different settings. And, it is a high quality pedal, without any twitches, and with maximum tracking, meaning right on the beat response, and truly "TRUE BYPASS"!
Plus with tweaking possibilities on a USB connection, or touch connection with a smartphone, through TONEPRINT app, with additional modulation effects possibilities, which cannot hurt, especially those who like tweaking things?
Who knows what one can do with this in connection with other pedals, sky is the limit!
Competition for the POG at a fraction of the price
I bought this pedal to use on bass to get a lead bass royal blood tone and my god its done its job.
This pedal does it all, octave up, and two octaves down. You can switch between a polyphonic mode and a classic monophonic mode and also a tone print mode. With the tone print mode you connect your pedal to a pc or mac (and there's a phone app) and you can customize your own tone. The octave here seems a bit less synth-y than on the POG it seems more natural.
Pros:
> Cheap
> Comparable to the POG
> Tone Print so you can get the perfect tone
> Perfect tracking on bass
Cons
> I haven't been using the stock poly or the mono modes at all
> Wouldn't want to stomp too hard on it.
Amazing octave pedal!
I was searching for an octave pedal that gave me sound options without too much fiddling. This pedal delivers that in spades!
The beautify of the Sub 'n' Up is the option to switch from classic (single note octaves) to polyphonic (full chords) and to individually control the upper and lower octaves.
In the Toneprint mode you can get also some really cool organ type sounds. With the toneprint software you can also edit the pedals settings to come up with your own unique effects. I found the pre-set effects out of the box really useful so I haven't played with this too much yet but it's a nice feature to have.
All in all, I'm really happy with this pedal. It's build like a tank as well so it will last a long time!
nice octaver pedal
This pedal has endless features! Just plug your cables in and you have 3 octavers in one: a polyphonic one, the toneprint octaver (the default is a sort of "organ") and finally a monophonic octaver. The tracking is impeccable, the polyphonic octaver is perfect for "organish" cords and swells. The monophonic octaver is perfect for more "vintage" sort of octaver effects. The default toneprint octaver is a beatiful "organ" sound.
However, plug in the provided usb cable and you are able to create your perfect octaver pedal. Any single parameter can be changed and saved to any of the three available modes on the pedal. So, endless possibilities.
Pros: built like a tank, endless possibility of customization
Cons: the sub octaves sound a tad "digital"
