My favorites

I own many headphones and these are my favorites. The sound is just right, not too much high-low boosted, but very natural sounding.

Checks all the boxes for the price!

These headphones are honestly pretty decent, considering the price and my personal favorite feature - the portability and ease of use when traveling with them. I don't know how many times a week, even sometimes a day, I've mangled the cable and have folded the earcups to get them in their folded, ready to be packed in a backpack form, and they still hold on like a champ. It's also nice that they come with a couple of extra high-quality cables which you can switch between pretty easily and a cute premium-feeling bag. The fact that the cable is detachable is also another plus in the "portability" book for me.

The sound quality is really nice too, I can hear a fair amount of detail and depth in the low and high end. Mids seem to be a tad scooped to me, however. That being said, the ATH-M50 X's are actually my first pair of "real" studio headphones so I don't really have that much experience when it comes to comparing them to the competition in that price category.

However, for that portability, price and comfort I don't think you can go wrong, especially if it's your first pair of studio headphones!

Why the ATH-M50 X

I use this headphone for tracking, producing, mixing and DJ-ing.

Because of it not having to harsh sound (compared to the M70 X) it is good for using it for hours without ear fatigue.

Once using this headphones for a while your mix wil translate good.

And ofcourse with the different cables it is a great headphone for dj-ing.

It's a really good headphone for its price.

Super confortable and defined sound

I tried a lot of studio headphones and staid with these one.

Using this headphones for 4 years and it became my reference sound. Its not perfectly flat frequency response, there is a lot of bass and hi-end, but when you know that you can get a good mixes, yes, I'm using this for mixing, when you don't have a good room for monitors this headphones is a solution, especially for beginning. But there is only one problem for me, this is a closed headphones and it makes my ears tired after 1-1,5 hours of working in these.

Comfortable and Clear

Bought these because I often need to capture sound on shoots while I am one-man-banding it. My other headphones were plastic and were really sore to wear after a while, and they didn't damped outside noise so it was hard to tell what I was hearing and what I was recording. These fix all that, they come with a few different cable sizes which was appreciated, and they fold up super small.

Very well balanced

A big plus for the audio quality, I have the feeling of a good rendering whatever the style of music listened.

Note that does not boost the low frequencies too much for a closed headphones, which is great for production.

Sound is crystal clear, they're well made and comfortable to wear. Hard to ask for more at this price point.

Perfect studio headphones — with a tiny caveat

Hear me out: all I wanted from my headphones was a tight fit and minimal sound leakage. ATH M50X did all that — and more! My cardioid mic doesn't pick up anything from them turned up to a decent volume, and the fit is almost too tight, so you'll need to do some serious headbanging for them to slip off your head. But their closed-back build offers a clean look into their sound profile and it might not be your cup of tea, at least at first. If you like their sound though, it's a versatile headset equally useful in studio space and on the go due to assortment of cables in the box.

Personally, I don't see myself spending a lot of time listening to, or working on music in them due to being spoiled by my open-backed headphones, but they certainly have their applications and it's hard for me to imagine anything better in this price range.

Like Family

I have had my m50x's for 7 YEARS, since I was 15 years old, and before I knew anything about audio, music, or much of anything else. The fact that I still own them astounds me given my track record, so I've decided to provide a review for the regular everyday consumers out there still considering these bad boys.

1. Style

Just look at the pictures mate.

2. Utility

These things are pretty portable, not too heavy and they fold up well. On top of that they come with a removable cable which is very handy, and 2 alternative cables, one longer, and one coiled. They come with a pleather carrying pouch that is good for any long distance travel, although it doesn't provide much protection.

3. Comfort

These headphones aren't too heavy, and the padding on the headband is sufficient, unfortunately over time it has worn and long listening sessions can hurt the top of your head a bit. The pads are a little bit of a weak spot, they're not very thick and eventually had to be replaced, but again this is 7 years of use from a teenager, so grains and salt and all that.

4. Sound

The M50x's are what you'd call 'V-shaped', meaning in this case that they have MUCH more pronounced bass (BIG 808'S), some more restrained and less clear mids (vocals and the inbetweens), and quite a sharp treble (high hats etc). I would consider them a 'fun' headphone. In the audiophile community there's a pretty common opinion that neutral sounding headphones are in some way superior, but we normies know that it's great for your music to have some punch (in this case a complete haymaker). I've always loved the sound of these headphones and I genuinely still do. The seal ​is decent, but if you're cranking your gabber on the bus like a degenerate there will definitely be some sound leak.

5. Build Quality

Now given that I have owned these for so long you may be led to believe that the build quality is quite good, but honestly it is pretty poor. These headphones are completely plastic (besides the pleather headband), which makes sense given the price. The earpads are cloth covered in pleather, which after about 5 years had completely peeled off. The cables provided are thick, but I had a persisting issue where the jacks of the cables kept bending and snapping, so be mindful of that.

Conclusion

The Audio Technica M50X's are a great pair of cans, and I've listened to them almost exclusively for a long time. I have to keep in mind that the issues of parts wearing is more to do with the sheer length of time that they have been my daily drivers. If you're looking for a pair of bass heavy midrange headphones then there's not many that can match these.

Great sound, not as comfy as I would like

Regarding sound, this model is unmistakably a good choice for the average consumer (great choice for those who wish to mix music as well). The pads could be slightly more comfortable, but I mostly feel slightly too much pressure on the sides of my head, so I feel the need to take it off if I wear it long than an hour.

Great headphones for pretty much anything but mixing

The headphones are great, they are well built and they are super comfy.

I wore them in the studio for hours while recording, and they never felt uncomfortable (albeit with some breaks here 'n' there) and sound-wise you can always hear everything clearly.

...BUT...

these ARE NOT for MIXING as they won't give you a flat frequency response AND they are super-tiring when mixing due to exactly that. Any reverb or delay effect will never translate to proper mixing when compared on monitors of ANY level and quality, EQ is not to be trusted as bass is way too powerful and highs are very "tinny".
