Golden Age Premier PRE-73
Based on 7 reviews
I bought this to record vocals and instruments in my home studio, specifically for use with my Warm Audio WA-47jr microphone. I wanted to try and capture some of the more vintage sound quality you get from the Neve pre amps and Neumann/Telefunken microphones, but without busting my bank account. I have the Golden Age Project Pre 73 MIII already and was very excited to read that they had now had the Neve-inspired GAP Premium Pre-73. On receiving the product, it comes in a very nice box with the usual GAP literature in the form of a nicely printed A4 card. Instructions for the full manual can be downloaded form the GAP website. Installation and plug in is very straight forward. It sits very nicely on my desk. In operation there is very little in the way of signal noise. I have used it for...
Warm Audio WA73-EQ

I should have bought the twin channel version it’s that good. At first I thought the dials looked brittle or over plasticyfied (I know that’s not a word) but tbh they’re neat, tough and got that good clunk old BBC Maida Vale vibe like Neves only newer than real vintage. Sonic range is big, warmth is right up there. The Tone button is a quick jump to additional punch tone, a bit like when you threw a loudness button on ya Aiwa stack. I’m finding it hard to avoid especially on a great vocal mic. It’s part of the Warm revolution for sure.
Universal Audio 6176
Based on 5 reviews
The reason I bought this is because of the UAD DSP Bundle offer. This is a great deal that for circa. EUR2000, you got both and the UAD is a great tool for mixing. Regarding the 6176, this is certainly something enhance my gear list. Build USA made product with very good quality components. Great purple light that is cool to have. Ease of use It is not something that straight forward and the one whom to use this will need more exploration. Since it can be splitted for using the compressor alone. It tequires me to spend quite some time to play around and see how this could respond to the source. Dont expect ypu could get a sweet spot easily with this channel strip. Sound quality A classic warm tone with a very strong character. The pre amp section has various control to allow you to ger a...
Klark Teknik Mic Booster CM-1
Based on 5 reviews
I purchased the Klark Teknik CM-1 recently after checking out a number of the competitors offerings and all I can say is wow, built like a tank and offering up a further 25db of clean gain from your phantom powered pre-amp or sound card. It's a no brainer, yes there are many other devices like this available on the market, but none at this price point and build. Anyone using dynamic mics will find this device a god send (lots of clean gain from your dynamic or ribbon mics) simple straight forward does what it says on the box stuff. It just does what its meant to do. It's application for for live use shouldn't be overlooked
Golden Age Premier PREQ-73
Based on 4 reviews
I'm a multi-instrumentalist who has been producing for over a decade. I've worked with all kinds of preamps in many studios from the lowest to the highest class. I decided to finally get a single channel preamp for my home studio. After researching for many months, reading reviews, listening to blind tests, I chose the Golden Age Premier PREQ-73 and I can't express how happy I am to have this unit. I was looking for the vintage neve sound without busting the bank. With a few small tweaks, this preamp just makes everything come to life. With the gain set at around 3 o'clock, things start to get very juicy and some really smooth and warm harmonics pop out that make everything in your mix sit in its own place. Regardless of the genre you're in, this preamp is a work-horse that will...
TritonAudio BigAmp Piezo
Based on 4 reviews
I'm a field recordist and thus use a variety of DIY contact microphones and piezo based contact microphones and hydrophones. The mics on the cheaper side don't come with their own impedance adaptor or preamp. A piezo mic usually has an impedance that is a lot higher than a standard microphone. Without an impedance adaptor, one usually gets thin and weak signal (the impedance mismatch works as a high pass filter). The Bigamp Piezo solves this by handling 7.5 Mega Ohm at the input side, which is enough for practically all piezo elements out there, and more than many similar impedance adaptors. This way you get a lot more out of your piezo based microphone, and even makes a DIY contact microphone sound full and proper. Unfortunately, it is not the quietest of impedance adaptors I have...
EVO SP8

If you need multiple inputs and outputs, you can honestly not go wrong with this and the Evo 16. Clean pre-amps, easy to use and set up. Loopback is a massive bonus. Use the outputs for send return FX. I am actually quite shocked that Audient can sell at this price. I keep thinking they missed off a zero. I have my Isla S2400 plugged into this and the Evo 16 and with its 8 mono outs and stereo out, I still have enough to add my MPC One, SP404 MKII and a mic or two. If I bought another SP8 I would be completely sorted, but that is just greedy. Although...
Black Lion Audio Auteur Quad
Based on 3 reviews
Recently, I started expanding my studio setup to involve outboard compressors and EQs, and needed a decent external preamp to handle the job. I was looking at many offerings but the BLA Auteur was probably the most affordable choice that wouldn't seemingly compromise audio quality. I love the sound of the preamp on drums and acoustic guitar. Prestine clean preamp this, excellent transient response, perfect for almost any application. My only gripe with this preamp is the lack of output faders, but there are pads so you don't have to worry about having issues with hot sources.
Heritage Audio HA-73 EQ Elite
Based on 3 reviews
The 1073 is likely to be the most famous pre-eq in the world. This time the guys at Heritage Audio have proposed a modern reissue which uses SMD technology mixed with classic transformers and inductors. The result is awesome. Big good sound, an always useful equalizer and a sensible price tag. Good for every thing just like its father with a very small difference with the original. I use it either for tracking or mixing. It is good for voices and instruments with a special mention for the acoustic guitars. The D.I. input is not as good as others devices I own (namely the API 512C). The external power supply does not seem to have effects on sound. The unit is well built and reliable (even with the small torque selectors). I had no problem so far.
Chandler Limited REDD.47

When I bought this, I am comparing the neve 1073 and this one. I am looking for the sound that everyone seems to always hyped for, "THE WARM 3D SOUND". Neve gives me the mid frequency bite, and this? Oh boy not just one color palette. When you push the fine gain to lower DBs, you get a thick bottomed, smooth high end sound. And when you pushed it hot, it distorts greatly. If you want some high end sparkle, try to play with the rumble filter. It is not just your another low pass filter!
